Well I finally broke my own rule and decided to do an accent wall. I have never been a huge fan of accent walls. There is just about them that I didn't like in almost all cases. So with a changed mind lets see what I plan on doing. One of the things I don't like about many accent walls are that they have no dimensions, or depth to them. It is just a wall with a different color than the other walls. What I'm trying to say is that the wall isn't interesting or the focal point of the room. Here's some examples of what I'm talking about. Bad Examples of Accent WallsSo what is so wrong with these photos? These photos all have the 2 focal points. The first thing to get an accent wall right is to make it the main focal point of the room. The Focal point of a room changes based on what is the purpose of the room. In bed rooms the focal point is usually the bed. Living room or dens are fireplaces, or tvs. Living room usually look best when the tv and fireplace are on the same wall. You want a room that when you went your eyes have a point where they can rest. A room with more than one focal point your eyes don't know where to stop and the room feels busy. Good Examples of Accent WallsThe first photo from Studio Mcgee is not a accent wall but a whole room of navy but that is the only wall with paneling. I love the green with the navy and the pattern of the wall paneling. The other photo is from Chris Loves Julia. I really love this example of an accent wall. The color goes so well along with the ship lap! I want to do a bold color that is really in-style right now and will be for at least 1-2 years. Navy's have been all the rage this past year or two but according to many design sources Navy is on its way out. This is probably the last year Navy will be big and in. While I really like navy and was originally planning on doing a whole room in Navy I no longer am. When I started looking at doing a whole room in Navy it really wasn't going to work. My room is in the basement meaning I don't get a lot of light making a dark color like navy to much for a whole room. Doing an accent instead of a whole room is the plan right now. What color am I going to do on an accent since I'm leaving Navy behind? As many of you know the Pantone color of the year is greenery. So I'm doing a deep rich green!! The same sources that say the Navy is going out says Green is in and here to stay for a while. Here are a couple green's I have been considering for the accent wall. Right now I'm thinking of the color Salamander by Benjamin Moore (middle picture) but I'm also loving Black Emerald by Sherwin Williams. I'll let you know what I ultimately decide on for the color. In addition to doing a bold color I also want to do a paneled wall. Here is what I'm kinda thinking. While I love ship lap I like paneled walls better for my room. I like when the boards aren't too close or too far apart. I really like Studio Mcgees distant between boards because it doesn't create a lot of squares or just a few. I haven't decided if the design I will do will have all equal squares or have different size squares and rectangles like the last photo from up above. Either way I'm super excited to do this project and see how it turns out!!! Stay tune for the final results!! What do you think of the accent walls? Do you think what I'm planning is a good idea? I love your feedback!!!
